Kasuga no Mukooshi, designated as a state important intangible folk cultural property in 1995 (Wakamizusai festival), is an annual festival handed down in the Kasuga region and held on the 14th day of the New Year at Kasuga Shrine. Sanki-kumiai (three-generation union), organized by the parishioners of Kasuga Shrine, takes the initiative in celebrating the local couples who married during the previous year. Taru seri, one of the events of the festival, is for men, including newlyweds, to duke it out for the possession of a barrel in a pond in front of the shrine. The sight is a valiant and well-known one throughout the country.
