Sakurayama Hachimangu Reitaisai (annual festival) is the autumn festival, a part of the Takayama Matsuri festival, the annual ceremony of Hie Shrine, and is known as Hachiman Matsuri. The festival is held on October 9-10, using the northern half of Takayama City as the festival area. The origin of the festival goes back to olden times. It is mentioned in a record from the Kyoho era (1716-1735) that a procession of floats was pulled along the street. The highlight of the festival is the gorgeous float procession, which is sometimes described as a moving Yomeimon (the Nikko Toshogu Shrines famous ornate gate). In the evening, each float is lit up with more than 100 lanterns and proceeds in procession.
