The origin of the Takayama Matsuri festival is said to go back to the second half of the 16th century to the 17th century. The spring festival is called Sanno Matsuri and is the annual festival of Hie Shrine, a shrine revered as the deity for the southern half of Takayama City. The highlight of the festival is the gorgeous float procession that is often described as the moving Yomeimon (Nikko Toshogu Shrines famous ornate gate). Each float is lit up with more than 100 lanterns and proceeds in procession at night. It is our pleasure to show you the beautiful floats and the activities and enthusiasm of people concerned to carry out this event.
