The Imai Gion Gyoji is a precious festival event which retains the original form of the Gion Matsuri festival in Kyushu and has been designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Fukuoka Prefecture. It is a festival for Imaitsususa Shrine, commonly called "Imai no Gion sama," which is located in Oaza Motonaga, Yukuhashi City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Praying for peace, a good harvest, perfect health, and the banishment of evils and bringing in of good luck, various events are held in Oaza Imai and Oaza Motonaga in Yukuhashi City, and in many other places. It is a summer tradition in the Buzen district and includes the performances of such traditional arts as renga, yama, and yatsubachi. This film was shot and edited on the occasion of the folk culture survey carried out in 2000 and records various events performed during the festival held from July 15 to August 3, 2000 (the Grand Festival was held on August 1-3).
