|Himeshima Bon Odori Dance|
The Bon Odori dance in Himejima is said to have developed from a nenbutsu odori (Buddhist prayer dance) and has a large repertoire of about 60 different numbers, including traditional dances and newly created dances which change every year. The traditional numbers include the kitsune-odori, aya-odori, zenidaiko, and sarumandayu, while the new dances are created every year, entertaining spectators with humorous gestures and elaborate costumes. The Bon Odori festival attracts most spectators on August 15 and 16, and dancers dance in the central plaza and around a bontsubo set up in each area.
